Martin Scorsese is eyeing a Grateful Dead biopic as one of his next projects, Deadline reported today (Nov. 18).
The legendary filmmaker, who just turned 79 years old, will take the helm of an untitled film on the iconic jam band as a director and producer. AppleTV+ is set to distribute - their second team-up with Scorsese after his next film, the crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon, which recently wrapped filming. (This is the director's second cinematic run-in with the Grateful Dead, having executive produced the 2017 documentary Long Strange Trip.)

Most interesting is the proposed casting: Jonah Hill is slated to take on the role of the band's late frontman, Jerry Garcia. (Hill earned his second Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street.) Furthermore, the surviving members of The Dead are slated to produce - including Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, along with Garcia's daughter Trixie - and the immortal library of Grateful Dead songs will be utilized in the film.
